To start trading, you'll need an account value of at least $500. And, if you plan to trade with leverage i.e., borrowing to trade using margin or short selling, you'll need at least $2,000 in equity; this is a regulatory minimum that applies at every U.S. broker-dealer.

• A minimum account value of $500 is required before trading can be enabled.

Margin accounts require at least $2,000 in equity to trade on margin or sell short.

• If your account balance falls below $2,000, your margin account stays open and you can keep trading, you just can't use margin or sell short until your equity is back above $2,000.
