Is there a cutoff time for opening a new options position?

Yes. Same-day expiring (0DTE) options positions can only be opened before a specific cutoff time each day. After the applicable cutoff, you may only close existing 0DTE positions — new opening orders will be rejected.

Cutoff times (regular trading days):

  • Equity & ETF options: 3:30 PM ET
  • Cash-settled index options (e.g., SPX, SPXW, RUT, VIX): 3:45 PM ET

Cutoff times (on days when the NYSE closes early, such as the day after Thanksgiving):

  • Equity & ETF options: 12:30 PM ET
  • Cash-settled index options: 12:45 PM ET

Important:

  • These cutoffs apply only to opening new 0DTE positions; existing positions can still be closed after the cutoff
  • Cutoff times may be adjusted based on market conditions or risk considerations
