The biggest story for investors in the week ahead will be all the stories that won't be told.
Should the government remain shut down, releases including the Census Bureau's imports and exports figures, wholesale trade and inventories, and the key jobless claims numbers from the Labor Department will be delayed.
What we will get this week are the minutes from the September FOMC meeting, which saw the Federal Reserve vote to cut rates for the first time this year.
Of particular interest will be any commentary that paints a fuller picture of the views offered by newly appointed Fed governor Stephen Miran, who has enthusiastically called for stronger rate cuts than his colleagues at the central bank.
The University of Michigan's first look at consumer sentiment in October is also set for release, likely serving as the week's highlight if the government remains shut down. Yahoo Finance reports.
🤖 AMD signs AI chip-supply deal with OpenAI, gives it option to take a 10% stake
AMD said on Monday it will supply artificial intelligence chips to OpenAI in a multi-year deal that would bring in tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue and give the ChatGPT creator the option to buy up to roughly 10% of the chipmaker.
The deal offers OpenAI an opportunity to take a stake in one of Nvidia's most formidable rivals and is a powerful endorsement of Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD's) AI chips and software.
"We view this deal as certainly transformative, not just for AMD, but for the dynamics of the industry," AMD executive vice president Forrest Norrod told Reuters on Sunday. Yahoo Finance reports.
🚙 Tesla teases Tuesday event as focus shifts to affordable EVs
Tesla on Sunday teased an October 7 event, as investors and analysts await a more affordable model to sustain sales momentum, sending shares of the company 2% higher in premarket trading.
In a nine-second video posted on social media platform X, the Elon Musk-led automaker showed a vehicle with its headlights illuminated in a dark setting.
The company hinted at an event scheduled for Tuesday in a separate video that had "10/7" at the end.
Tesla has previously delayed rolling out a lower-cost version of the Model Y in the United States.
The company said in June that it had made "first builds" of the vehicle, but would start selling it in the fourth quarter and ramp up output slower than planned. Yahoo Finance reports.
📊 Critical Metals shares surge after Reuters report says Washington eyeing stake
Shares of Critical Metals (CRML.O), surged over 75% in premarket trading on Monday after Reuters reported the Trump administration is discussing taking an equity stake in the development-stage mining company, citing four people familiar with the talks.
If completed, the deal would give the U.S. government a direct interest in Greenland's largest rare earths project.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump had invoked emergency powers to boost domestic production of critical minerals as part of a broad effort to offset China's near-total control of the sector. Reuters reports.
📱 OpenAI’s third annual DevDay kicks off at 10 a.m. PT in San Francisco
Software and internet investors are keenly focused on where OpenAI will go next and how disruptive it could be,” said UBS analyst Karl Keirstead.
As OpenAI continues to expand, he said, “the consensus view is that it will have to diversify more aggressively beyond ChatGPT subscriptions.”
Investors will be looking for clues about those plans at OpenAI’s third annual DevDay, which kicks off at 10 a.m. in San Francisco.
The event could drive another round of stock moves with potential gains for partners or infrastructure providers and declines for companies in businesses the artificial intelligence giant is pushing into. Yahoo Finance reports.
