Last week, Walmart reported strong earnings, and news that retail sales surged and jobless claims fell showed that consumers are still spending and the labor market is strong.
Last week’s reports are from Lowe’s on August 13, followed by Target and TJX on August 14. Dollar Tree and Ross Stores report on August 15. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF has climbed 7% in 2024, lagging behind the S&P 500 index’s 16% year-to-date surge.
Keep a close eye on these retail earnings this week, as they could determine the near-term market direction.
