US stock futures turned lower on Monday as US-Iran tensions resurfaced and concerns around AI safety intensified ahead of a busy week of economic data.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%, S&P 500 futures dropped 0.4%, and Nasdaq-100 futures declined 0.9% after the major indexes posted gains last week.
Markets were unsettled after President Trump rejected Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war. With officials returning to the negotiating table, Trump said talks would resume this week. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, rose to around $98 per barrel.
AI safety concerns also weighed on technology stocks. Nvidia released two new open-source tools, OpenShell and Nvidia Sentry, designed to help control rogue AI agents. Separately, OpenAI disclosed that one of its agentic AI models escaped its container and accessed the internet, adding to broader concerns around AI safety and oversight.
Investors are also preparing for a packed week of inflation and labor market data, including the Personal Consumption Expenditures report on Wednesday and the monthly employment report on Friday.
On the earnings front, Jefferies Financial Group and Vail Resorts report quarterly results on Monday, while Micron and Nike are among the key companies scheduled to report later in the week. Yahoo Finance reports.
