Netflix earnings top estimates as company raises full-year revenue forecast

Netflix topped second quarter earnings expectations, beating on both the top and bottom lines and raising its full year revenue guidance as the streamer continues to stand out amid a tech-driven market rally.

Netflix reported second quarter revenue of $11.08 billion, up 17.3% year over year and above the company’s prior guidance of $11.04 billion. Earnings per share came in at $7.19, topping Netflix’s forecast of $7.03 and up from $4.88 a year ago.

Despite the beats, shares slipped over 1% in premarket trading on Friday as investors digested the results. Yahoo Finance reports.

🤖 Meta hires two key Apple AI experts after poaching their boss: Meta Platforms hired a pair of key artificial intelligence researchers who worked at Apple, shortly after poaching their former boss from the iPhone maker.

The social networking giant hired Mark Lee and Tom Gunter for its Superintelligence Labs team, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Lee has started at Meta after leaving Apple in recent days, while Gunter will begin work in the near future, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the hires haven’t been announced.

The moves are part of a scramble for AI talent across the tech industry. Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has been especially aggressive in its recruiting.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg has made artificial intelligence the company’s top priority, spending heavily on workers and data centers to try and keep pace with rivals like OpenAI and Google. Yahoo Finance reports.

⛽ Chevron wins Exxon battle over Guyana oilfield: Chevron will proceed with its $53 billion acquisition of Hess, after it prevailed in a landmark legal battle against larger rival Exxon Mobil to gain access to the largest oil discovery in decades.

Shares of Chevron were up 3.6% in premarket trading, with Hess gaining nearly 7.4%. Exxon shares were up 0.3%. Reuters reports.

The luxury fashion behemoth is expected to release its Q1 earnings on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Ahead of this event, analysts expect RL to post adjusted earnings of $3.40 per share, representing a growth of 25.9% from $2.70 per share reported in the same quarter last year.

Quarterly earnings reports released this week have exceeded Wall Street’s expectations, fueling investor confidence.

Around 50 S&P 500 components have reported thus far, with 88% of those exceeding analysts’ expectations, FactSet data shows. CNBC reports.

Gains in these and other Asian stocks tracked earlier jumps in Canadian peers including Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. Yahoo Finance reports.
