US stock futures faltered on Tuesday as investors weighed the likely fallout of President Trump's latest tariff blitz, with the US government on the brink of a shutdown.
Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average and on the S&P 500 both dropped roughly 0.2%. Contracts on the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 also slipped about 0.2%, on the heels of modest closing gains on Wall Street. Yahoo Finance reports.
🪵 Trump tariffs on timber, lumber, furniture to hit Canada, US housing
President Trump on Monday night announced tariffs of 10% on softwood timber and lumber alongside a 25% tariff on "certain upholstered wooden products" due to take effect on October 14, according to the White House.
This was the latest set of tariffs to be announced impacting furniture industries after Trump posted to Truth Social about a flurry of tariffs on kitchen cabinets, vanities and other upholstered products on September 26 to take effect on October 1.
Trump said this will help "strengthen supply chains, bolster industrial resilience." Yet home builders have warned this could deter investments in new homes and renovations.
Canada is also set to be hit hard by the order, as it's the US's largest wood supplier and already subject to duties of 35.2%. Yahoo Finance reports.
📊 Etsy shares soar 16% after OpenAI partnership on ChatGPT payment
Etsy shares soared almost 16% on Wall Street on Monday after the firm announced it had partnered with tech giant OpenAI to allow users to buy products through ChatGPT.
Thanks to a framework called Instant Checkout, designed with the help of fintech Stripe, users of the chatbot service in the US will be able to make direct single-item purchases from US Etsy sellers.
OpenAI added that one million Shopify merchants, including Glossier and SKIMS, will be available through its chatbot in the near future. The company is also considering adding multi-item carts and expanding merchants and regions. Yahoo Finance reports.
📱 Electronic Arts sees a record buyout deal. But should shareholders be happy?
Videogame maker Electronic Arts Inc. confirmed Monday that it will be acquired by Saudi Arabia’s PIF sovereign-wealth fund, private-equity firm Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners in a $55 billion deal, which would be the largest-ever leveraged buyout.
The record merger, according to Dow Jones Market Data, marks another videogame-industry megadeal after Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.’s $12.7 billion purchase of Zynga Inc. and Microsoft Corp.’s +0.61% $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard Inc. MarketWatch reports.
🛒 Amazon’s next stock catalyst isn’t AI — it’s online groceries
Artificial intelligence has been the main catalyst for the “Magnificent Seven” companies this year.
Admittedly, that hasn’t done much to help Amazon.com Inc.’s stock - but the company has another growth driver up its sleeve.
Amazon’s e-commerce business is set to benefit massively from its expansion into online grocery delivery, led by its same-day delivery initiative.
On Monday, HSBC analyst Paul Rossington lifted his Amazon price target to $260 from $256 and reiterated his buy rating, citing the company’s grocery delivery as a major catalyst. MarketWatch reports.
🏩 Budget hotels are feeling the squeeze of an uncertain economy
Credit card companies and airlines are scrambling to out-premium each other. Trading on consumers' desire for amenities - and offering tiered services to justify withholding them - has proven an effective strategy to cater to growing appetites for comfort and even indulgence.
And as luxury products with their high margins and big numbers seem to be thriving, budget services are struggling, especially in the travel segments.
"We are increasingly concerned about the backdrop for lower-end and select service hotels," wrote Bank of America analysts Shaun Kelley and Dany Asad in a report on Monday. Yahoo Finance reports.
🤖 China’s DeepSeek launches next-gen AI model. Here’s what makes it different
Chinese startup DeepSeek’s latest experimental model promises to increase efficiency and improve AI’s ability to handle a lot of information at a fraction of the cost, but questions remain over how effective and safe the architecture is.
DeepSeek sent Silicon Valley into a frenzy when it launched its first model R1 out of nowhere last year, showing that it’s possible to train large language models (LLMs) quickly, on less powerful chips, using fewer resources.
The company released DeepSeek-V3.2-Exp on Monday, an experimental version of its current model DeepSeek-V3.1-Terminus, which builds further on its mission to increase efficiency in AI systems, according to a post on the AI forum Hugging Face. CNBC reports.
