US stock futures rose on Wednesday amid rising bets on interest-rate cuts, with the next wave of earnings reports on deck following a volatile day on Wall Street.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures moved up roughly 0.4%. Meanwhile, contracts on the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 added 0.6% and 0.8% respectively.
Comments from Jerome Powell are boosting market spirits in the face of US-China trade friction and a US government shutdown with no end in sight.
The Federal Reserve Chair said Wednesday that “downside risks to employment appear to have risen” implying more rate cuts are on the cards.
It has also intensified focus on earnings season. Reports from Bank of America (BAC), Morgan Stanley (MS) will add to the picture painted by the likes of JPMorgan on Tuesday, while PNC Financial (PNC) and Abbott Laboratories (ABT), are also on the docket before the opening bell. Alphabet's Waymo plans to launch its fully driverless ride-hailing service in London in 2026, the robotaxi firm said on Wednesday, as it looks to expand its footprint to major international cities.
Waymo has grown slowly but steadily over the years in the United States despite tough regulations and expensive technology. Now, it is picking up speed through partnerships with ride-hailing platforms and fleet operators at a time when Tesla is rolling out its long-promised robotaxi service in the country. Reuters reports.
💰 Financials up on strong earnings
Shares of banks and other financial institutions rose after a generally strong round of earnings. Goldman Sachs Group slipped even after the Wall Street bank's earnings surpassed expectations as a wave of deal activity buoyed its investment bank.
Goldman and other banks sold off amid fears that rising trade tensions with China and muted jobs growth would lead to a slowdown in financial activity.
Those fears were allayed somewhat by comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, hinting at a further loosening of monetary policy.
JPMorgan Chase rose after strength in Wall Street trading and Main Street lending operations bolstered third-quarter earnings at the largest US bank by assets. MarketScreener reports.
